Arlington’s 100 Homes Campaign was recently featured in a Springfield Connection article entitled, “County Combats Chronic Homelessness”, as a successful model for Fairfax County, which recently joined the nation-wide 100,000 Homes Campaign to End Homelessness and will be conducting their Registry Week sometime next year.

successfully placed in permanent housing. This puts the effort well ahead of the campaign goal of housing 100 people by July 2013.

The Arlington 100 Homes Campaign is part of the national 100,000 Homes Campaign and the state-wide 1,000 Homes for 1,000 Virginians initiative. The 100 Homes Campaign is a community effort kicked off in October 2012 when 150 volunteers and civic leaders hit the streets before dawn to survey and register homeless persons living on the streets of Arlington.

The community effort continues as nonprofit partners from the Arlington Street Peoples Assistance Network, Arlington-Alexandria Coalition for the Homeless, and Volunteers of America collaborate with County staff to house the most vulnerable individuals who are ready for housing.

100 Homes Campaign is an initiative of Arlington County’s 10 Year Plan to End Homelessness. The 10 Year Plan is based on the best practice strategy of “housing first,” which focuses on preventing homelessness, moving people who do become homeless into housing rapidly, and providing the wrap-around services necessary for them to maintain their housing permanently.

Permanent Supportive Housing Tour

Permanent supportive housing is the cornerstone of Arlington’s efforts to prevent and end homelessness for the most vulnerable individuals. It is proven to work with people who have severe and complex needs such as mental illness, chemical dependence and chronic health conditions.

The purpose of permanent supportive housing is to provide, first a home, and then continuing supportive services for those who have experienced homelessness (often for very long periods of time), for those individuals and families with an adult head of household with disabilities (including mental illness and chemical dependency), for those with criminal backgrounds, for youth who have aged out of foster care, and for some veterans. The goal is to support a person’s path towards self sufficiency – to give everyone the opportunity to achieve independence, living in their own home.
