Registry Week

On October 17-19, 2011  approximately 150 volunteers and civic leaders were trained and headed out in teams before dawn to survey and register homeless individuals in Arlington County. Their efforts resulted in a detailed survey of chronically homeless persons who are the most vulnerable to an early death.

The data went into a Vulnerability Index, which helps match the people in the greatest need to appropriate housing and services, with the goal of moving the most vulnerable individuals into permanent housing, where they can then receive the necessary social services to address their needs.

I know a lady, Margaret Ransom, and I think she is homeless. She often goes to the Thomas Jefferson Community Center. I met her about a year ago, but have since moved away from the northern Virginia area. Noni, who works at the center, knows Martha. Noni is out of the office until the coming week, and I know that the survey will be conducted this coming week. I will contact Noni next week, and, meanwhile, I wanted you to know about Martha so that she could get help with housing if she needs it.

  3. [...] Housing for the Homeless — This week volunteers canvased the streets of Arlington in an effort to identify the 100 most vulnerable homeless individuals in the county. There is a young person with a MR/DD who is sometimes across the street from Whitlows on Wilson, near the Clarendon metro stop. They carry stuffed animals, and I believe it is important to figure out the situation. I hope you identify and am shamed that I haven’t pursued this myself.
